History of RIVCASSON

A Legacy of professional growth and impact

Before the turn of the millennium, Rivers State lacked a formally organized counselling association. However, this gap was soon addressed through the visionary efforts of the late Dr. Virgy Amadi, who was then the Head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling at the University of Port Harcourt. In 2000, Dr. Amadi initiated the creation of an official body for counsellors in the state, which led to the first formal meeting of the association on June 2, 2000, held in the counselling laboratory at the University of Port Harcourt. This historic gathering brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including university lecturers, postgraduate students, and practising counsellors from educational institutions across Rivers State.

At this first meeting, the association was formally constituted, with Dr. Virgy Amadi assuming the role of Chairperson. Other founding members of the leadership included Mr. E. Udofia as Secretary, Mr. Patrick Echebe as Public Relations Officer (PRO), and Dr. B.N. Iruloh as Treasurer. Shortly after, from August 16 to 20, 2000, RIVCASSON made its first appearance at the National Conference in Abuja, which was held at the National Universities Commission. Nine of the founding members attended this national event, marking a significant milestone in the organization's growth and recognition. In its early years, the association's activities centered around monthly meetings, which became a core aspect of RIVCASSON’s operations. Communication in these early days was challenging, as mobile phones were not yet widespread. Mr. Patrick Echebe, as PRO, took it upon himself to personally deliver meeting invitations to members across Port Harcourt, ensuring consistent attendance and active participation.

In 2004, the association underwent a reorganization after Mr. Udofia stepped down from his role as Secretary. This prompted the need for restructuring, and the leadership evolved to better meet the demands of a growing and active membership.
Throughout this time, Dr. Amadi continued to advocate for the inclusion of professional counsellors in public schools. Through meetings with key stakeholders, including the Commissioners of Education, she emphasized the importance of counsellors in addressing critical societal challenges. Sadly, Dr. Amadi passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy that would influence the association for many years to come. After her passing, leadership of RIVCASSON transitioned to Mr. Urauta, who became the new Chairperson, supported by an elected executive team.
Over the years, RIVCASSON continued to expand its scope and activities. The association began hosting workshops, seminars, and conferences, becoming a key player in promoting professional development and enhancing the status of counselling within the state and beyond. In 2019, under the leadership of Dr. C.J. Ugwu, RIVCASSON hosted the 44th National Conference at the University of Port Harcourt's Ebitimi Banigo Hall. This event marked a significant achievement for the association, cementing its position as a leader in the field. Dr. Ugwu also made notable strides by establishing localized coordination cells in various educational institutions and ministries across Rivers State to enhance membership engagement and strengthen RIVCASSON’s impact.
The association’s growth and success continued with each successive administration. Notable milestones included the establishment of a permanent secretariat, the organization of biannual conferences, and the induction of student counsellors from the University of Port Harcourt. Today, RIVCASSON has over 400 members, including more than 40 Ph.D. holders and 30 professors, reflecting the high level of professionalism and academic excellence within the association.

RIVCASSON’s impact has extended beyond Rivers State, as the association has been consistently represented at national conferences since its inception. These conferences have served as platforms for professional development, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing among counsellors from across Nigeria. The association’s active participation in these events has contributed significantly to the advancement of the counselling profession in the country.

This recognition was followed by Dr. Uchendu Esi Ebele, who was honoured with the same award in 2022 at the conference in Yola.
In addition to these individual accolades, RIVCASSON has played a key role in shaping the national leadership of the counselling profession. Dr. Bright Ikechukwu became the first member from Rivers State to be elected into a national position, serving as the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON). Following in his footsteps, Prof. Chinelo Joy Ugwu was elected as the National Vice President II of CASSON, further establishing Rivers State’s influence at the national level.
